How dates are written in the United States
In the US the standard short date format is month/day/year (MM/DD/YYYY), for example 09/24/2026. Most other countries write day/month/year, and the international ISO 8601 standard uses year-month-day (2026-09-24), which sorts correctly in spreadsheets and file names. When you share a date with people abroad, writing the month as a word (September 24, 2026) avoids confusion.
Day of the year and week number
A regular year has 365 days and a leap year has 366; 2028 is the next leap year. Week numbers usually follow ISO 8601: weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week that contains the first Thursday of January, so most years have 52 weeks and some have 53.
Why today's date can differ across the US
The continental US spans four main time zones (Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific), plus Alaska and Hawaii. Around midnight Eastern Time it can already be tomorrow in New York while it is still today in Los Angeles or Honolulu, so always check the local date for deadlines and bookings.
